Paolo Data Blin: «Today a designer must have sensibility for the space, the volume, new lifestyles, the context and a clear idea of what he would like to represent»

Paolo Data Blin (creative director at 997a) will present a lecture «Lighting projects for public spaces» on Interlight Design Academy that will be open on the trade fair Interlight Russia | Intelligent building Russia from 10th to 13th September in Moscow.

– You are planning to visit Moscow in September and give a lecture at Interlight Russia | Intelligent building Russia. Is it the first time you visit Russia? Have you been in Moscow before?

– Yes, I’ve been in Moscow several times because I have worked for Sochi Olympic games as interior designer for two hotels in Krasnaya Polyana. I love Moscow. I miss it. I think it’s a great city with great appeal and enormous potentiality.

– What are you expecting from Moscow? Personally and as a lighting designer? What do you expect from the evening lighting concept of the city? Should it be modern? Have you heard about recent changes in the lighting cityscape of Moscow?

– Moscow is a city in continuous mutation. I like to discover every time the historical architecture of the city, looking for the real genius loci of it.

I would like to find in that evening an important reflection about the city, the new life style inside it and how to let live new technology and history together.

– How do you think, what education should a lighting designer have? What education do you have?

– Great answer! I think today a designer must have sensibility for the space, the volume, new lifestyles, the context and a clear idea of what he would like to represent.

I have studied architecture and design but I have studied theatre and dance too.

My work as a scenographer and lighting designer in theatre has been fundamental for my education because in theatre light is the architecture in which actors live and you could represent spaces simply using light.

In few words: technical preparation and artistic attitude.

– How do you think, should a lighting concept be created at the beginning of a project?

– The project for me is a vision borning in my mind with a lots of details and light is one of them.

– What is the difference between lighting in architecture, interior, events?

– Except the technical differences between the technical materials you use in the three different fields,

In architecture you try to represent in the right way the concept of a building, for example.

In interior you try to find with light the right atmosphere for the function of a room .

In events you tell a story and you try to build with light volumes, walls.

All should be done with the goal of create emotions in people enjoying a space.

– What are the most important goals of a city lighting?

– Walk, eat, sleep, move, buy, kiss….. You have to divide into categories the lifestyle connected to the city blocks. Then you study the right lighting for the functions, the buildings and the streets represent. The city must be lighted for its proper functions and not only for the beauty of its building.

– How should the lighting of public spaces affect people? What message should the architecture of public spaces translate?

– Light is emotion. People love lighting because it puts into connection themselves with one of the ancestral fear: darkness. When we project lighting for a building, a commercial center, a house we must connect functions and emotions. The right balance between these two values is the goal.

– Could you tell us about your favorite lighting projects in Europe and particularly in your own country?

– I think that Torino is really very observant about city lighting: all the important building of the city as been lighted by architects, artist who took care about the historical signs and the importance of it.

In winter, for Christmas time, from 1998,  the city invites a lots of artists (Rebecca Horn, Daniel Buren, Mario Merz, Mimmo Palladino, Gilberto Zorio…) to illuminate the center of Torino.

The result is really impressive…

– Could you, please, share your professional opinion: what cities already have a good city lighting concepts?

– London has improved in the last four years its city light concept;

– What are current trends in the sphere of city lighting?

– Light is precious and electricity too: one important trend is to use light in the right moment with no energy waste.

Another  trend is to give historical centers a pale light to let people understand the historical light level when cities has been built.

Than the new luxury is to customize, trying to give everyone the possibility of his own lifestyle.

– What do you think about the lighting market? (Trends, problematics, future of the market)

– We have to use light for a project, not viceversa. Market  should understand that the goal is to propose lighting innovation for specific themes.

I dream a future in which you could decide every day to customize your own life, helped by intelligent technology.
